Mission Statement

Helping each other find and follow Christ.

Vision Statement

The Grace congregation strives to be a transforming community; accepting people where they are and transforming them into dynamic disciples for Jesus Christ.  Traditional as well as new techniques will draw persons into a deep and lasting relationship with Jesus Christ.

History

Our congregation has existed in Hicksville for the past 169 years.  First we were Methodist Episcopals, then Methodists, and now United Methodists.  From its inception in 1840, we have had over 50 pastors and have built and worshiped in three different churches.

The Honorable A.P. Edgerton donated a lot of land large enough to build a church and parsonage at the corner of S. Main and Edgerton Streets in 1875.  By the year 1898, with a membership of over 300, it was time for this growing congregation to move to the present location on West High Street.  A new brick structure was dedicated on December 17, 1899.  For 40 years, the Methodists worshiped there through the Depression and WWI.  A fire tragically destroyed this building on a Sunday morning in 1940.  The grand piano, which still compliments the sanctuary with music on Sunday mornings, was one of the few items saved.

A building committee consisting of O.C. Perkins, Carma J. Rowe, LaVerne Blosser, Charles Pool, and Arlie Smith took on the monumental task of rebuilding.  The present building was dedicated on July 27, 1941.  Many committees took part in the planning of various additions over the years.  Through the dedication and generosity of the entire membership we now have one of the finest and oldest churches in our community.

Today, with a membership of nearly 300, the Grace United Methodist Church is an active and growing church.  On Sunday mornings, when the historic church bell penetrates the morning air, our members proudly fill the pews as they have done for over 169 years.
